Fellow PCA Members,
Recently I received a copy of “The Redline Report” published by the Central New York Region Porsche Club of America. I found it to be interesting and informative.
I exchanged e-mails several months ago (with Joyce Gladle), at that time I had introduced myself as a first time Porsche owner. Also, at that time, I informed you that I was scheduled to attend Brumos Driving Experience, Porsche Driving School, at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville FL. You asked me to consider reporting back to you with comments regarding my experience.
This may be more information than you need to know, but I am excited about sharing my Porsche experience.
After 44 years of driving a ’65 Corevette Stingray, ’67 Austin Healey 3000, ’83 SL 380, several SLKs (230, 320 & 350) and finally a ’09 SL 550, I felt it was time to try something different. I needed to find a car that took all of these vehicles I had owned and place them on one frame. I decided on a Porsche. My wife, Linda, contends this was my 5th “mid-life crisis”.
Linda and I live part of the year in Skaneateles and part of the year in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (20 miles from Jacksonville, FL). I had my SL 550 serviced at Bromos in Jacksonville. Across the street from the Mercedes dealership is Brumos Porsche. In February 2012 I visited Brumos Porsche and met an extremely knowledgeable individual by the name of Bill Bianco. The first thing I said to Bill was “educate me” as I know very little about Porsche, its history and its car. Immediately, I not only became a customer but also I gained a friend in Bill. On February 13, 2012 I placed my order for a “2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S”. On April 23rd I took possession of the car. The next day, Linda and I participated in a “rally” with 26 other Porsche owners from Jacksonville to Jekyll Island, SC. Welcome to the Porsche Family.

As a result of purchasing a vehicle from Brumos Porsche, you are invited to the Brumos Driving Experience, a free, one-day, Porsche driving school at Gainesville Raceway. On that day Brumos Driving Experience Chief Instructor Hurley Haywood and his staff demonstrated how to safely exploit and maximize the extreme capabilities of my Porsche.
On Saturday, October 13 at 8:30am, Linda and I arrived at Gainesville Raceway with 13 other Porsche owners. (Note: Don’t count the first car on the left, that was Hurley’s car. Our Porsche is the last one in Hurley’s row.)

The “Experience” was a series of three “Exercises” throughout the day, which ended at approximately 4:30pm. The road course allowed you to maneuver various “s’s”, “u’s”,
straight a-ways, and various slalom procedures. The entire day exceeded my expectations.
I was fortunate, as was 3 others drivers, to have Hurley Haywood, as our personal instructor. Each “Exercise” was address this way. First, Hurley would drive my car and I was in the passenger seat. Next, I drove and Hurley rode in the passenger seat as he instructed on how best to attack the course and maximize the performance of my Porsche. Lastly, I drove the vehicle alone through the exercise several times alone. I become more confident as the day progress. In addition to Hurley, one of the other instructors was Leh Keen, Hurley’s heir apparent. The third instructor was a retired Florida Trooper who taught troopers how to drive.

Prior to the end of the day, both Hurley and Leh took all of the participants and their guest twice around the track in the famous “59 Porsche”.

It was a great day and a wonderful experience. The Brumos Team did an outstanding job organizing a “Driving Experience” that I will never forget.
