2013 CNY Autocross Schedule

An autocross is the sport of trying to navigate your car through a defined course of pylons, usually on a large parking lot.  Autocross courses are set up using soft, orange traffic pylons, which will not damage your car.

Events are run at speeds usually between 30 and 40 MPH, usually in second gear.  Autocross is a “performance driving event” and a safe way to learn how to drive your car at its limit.  You not only learn how to handle your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you also:

Gain confidence in your driving ability
Learn the limits of your car’s brakes
Learn correct seating, hand and foot positions
Learn the limits of your car’s tire adhesion

Plan to join us for these fun-driving events.  You will not only enjoy yourself, you learn valuable skills for everyday driving on the street.  And you will get to know why your Porsche is such an exceptional automobile!

Watkins Glen Porsche Clash 2013

Brian Watson, #509 944 Spec-1

This year’s Clash saw SIXTY 944’s registered to race – enough so that the Green Run Group was comprised solely of 944’s in three classes; Spec-1, Spec-2, and Spec-3.  It was the first time that I have been in a race group where all the cars were reasonably close in preparation and where we could run in packs and race together competitively throughout the entire sprints and enduro. Track Time Photos has some great shots posted on their site.  If you are a 944 fan like me, check them out at www.tracktimephotos.com and search under PCA using the 6/1/13 and 6/2/13 dates of the clash.  Here’s one…thanks to Track Time Photos for being at the track and allowing me to use it.

Blue Lightning Racing 2013 PCA Clash Club Race

Blue Lightning at the Clash
By Larry Lee
Late May brings the Porsche Clash to Watkins Glen. This is one of the biggest events of the year on the PCA racing calendar. The Blue Lightning race team has been running this race since 2006. We have had some good results here and some bad as well. Last year Gene Raymondi had his first ever crash in practice for this race damaging his 2004 Boxster enough that it was unusable for the Clash. We climbed back on the horse and were able to recover somewhat with a mid pack finish using his 1986 944 Turbo race car. This year things are looking up. Over the winter Chris White rebuilt the Boxsters engine and transmission, added a light weight fiberglass roof with quick releases and knocked a lot of weight out of the car. Chris installed a set of Nitrogen powered air jacks to make tire and brake pad changes much faster (just like a cup car!). All good things in the go fast calculus. Coming off some good results in the first race of the season at Lime Rock about a month earlier Gene and New Blue were ready for the Clash. The last few years, the Blue Lightning Boxster has been running near the front. Not good enough to win this event yet but close enough for us to start harboring crazy thoughts of podium finishes.

The start of the new 2013 club race season, Central NY Club racers at Lime Rock.

By Larry Lee

Well it’s a new year and the start of a new PCA club racing season. Over the off season, racers across the country have been reading rule books, buying parts, working on cars and looking forward to the time when engines start and the process of turning money into noise can begin. For Central NY PCAers Brian Watson and Gene Raymondi, the new racing season began again at the Connecticut Valley Region Twin Sprint Rumble Club Race at Lime Rock CT on Friday and Saturday, April 26th and 27th.

On a very-English cloudy and damp day, over 150 cars and motorcycles gathered at Lorenzo State Historic Site, in Cazenovia, for the Eurocar 2013 show. The field included eighteen Porsches, which were judged in two separate classes. Three of the nine CNY PCA members in the show were awarded prizes as follows: Jerry Goldberg, 356, 1st place; Brad Hall, 356, 2nd place; Rich Ertinger, 928, 3rd place. Central New York’s 2013 Summer Tech Session

Central New York’s 2013 Summer Tech Session

This summer we are holding the 1st Safety Chair Tech session from Gil Wistrup!

Gil will impress everyone with his charm and skill at the Morrisville State College

Automotive Center as we enjoy another CNY activity with our dear friends.

CNY PCA 2013

On Saturday, August 24, 2013, Central New York PCA will hold a Family Picnic, Wash and Shine Car Show and Porsche Kids’ Cross.

This will be a relaxing day designed to check out some beautiful Porsches, fraternize with our car buddies, enjoy some good summertime food, kick back, put your feet up and enjoy a fine summer day in the shade of tall trees with cool lake breezes brushing past you. Now you might ask: “Where can we find such a spot?” Well, I will tell you.

We will be at back at beautiful Taughannock Falls State Park on Route 89, just north of Ithaca again this year, BUT at a different pavilion. We have secured the Creekside Pavilion this year—see directions below. This is a beautiful, covered pavilion, right on the lake front offering beautiful vistas of Cayuga Lake. This is a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Finger Lakes. Don’t miss it.

The Porsches will be parked for display on the grass under the tall trees with beautiful Cayuga Lake in the background. This is a perfect setting to take some great photos of your favorite car!

One of the highlights of our Family Picnic has proven to be the “Porsche Kids’ Cross”. We will lay out a little autocross course and the kids can participate with any “vehicle” they would like—scooter, tricycle, bike—whatever they want to bring! (Sorry, no motorized vehicles.) We will have all the proper goodies—a tech inspection, a drivers’ meeting, timing equipment and awards!! So bring out the kids and grand kids, they will have a great time!!

Do join us!! We are going to have a fun and relaxing day!!

Ann and Mason Somerville have made us an offer we can’t refuse!! They have invited us to their home for a light brunch, a ride through the southern Adirondacks and northern Oneida Country and then back to their home for an old-fashioned, potluck cookout and summer party! What’s not to like about that?

Is there any better way to spend a Sunday in July than enjoying your favorite car and your car friends? Most likely not, so this promises to be a relaxing and fun day.

Ann and Mason say: “come prepared for relaxing activities, including fishing in our pond (bring your gear), tennis, basketball, walk in the woods on maintained trails–or not as one wishes. Raspberries may be in season so bring your pails and appropriate clothing if you wish to pick wild berries”.

We will meet at Ann’s and Mason’s home in the morning, chat with our fellow CNY members, enjoy some light refreshments and then set off for a nice drive planned by Mark Schultz. Why Mark? Well, because he is responsible for the Somervilles affection for a certain German marque — so he gets to lead the “parade” of Porsches.

CNY New Member Luncheon 2013

CNY held its 1st ever NEW MEMBER Luncheon at the Greek Peek Ski Lodge on May 25th 2013 and we welcomed a wonderful group of the newest Porsche brethren.  The CNY board and CNY chairs provided a brief commentary on the workings of our club and spent the morning meeting some great new friends.  When you see a new face at the track, dinner, Rally or picnic… Why not introduce yourself.
